Beschreibung

Symphonic Organ Samples (SOS-2)
L’Eglise Royale Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles (Belgium)
Pierre Schyven 1874 / Salomon van Bever 1912

All stops were sampled in Thirds. The true nature and charakter of each pipe was captured. Every single tone is 30 seconds long for the stops of the manuals. The lenght of the pedaltones is 60 seconds. All tones are not looped in any way. Looping means as a result adding information to original material, which is after that no longer original.

The natural reverb of the cathedral is given upon key-release. If you leave the key, a second sample is heared, showing the rich reverb which wasn’t manipulated. This release reverberation tail was recorded in the cathedral. This release reverberation tail is still part of the original sample. This idea was for the first time ever used in SOS-1 „La Madeleine“ and there are good reasons for getting this original reverb
again for SOS-2. All instruments have 18 multisamples recorded in stereo which can be played from C up to c
4. Some rare stops with
significant spectrums of their overtones were captured chromatically. Those instruments contain 55 multisamples.

Every stop was sampled with the smallest headroom using two Neumann KM 130 microphones and a very good SPL Pre-Amp direct to a Digital Audio Tape. No dithering of the 16 Bit-Samples was allowed. Sounddesign was done with Samplitude only in two steps: 1.) Cutting the
samples, 2.) For the reverb tails in some stops of the manual we were using the FFT-Analyzer cuting off the frequencies below the
groundtone, because of the trucks driving in the night around the cathedral. Above the spectrum of the overtones strictly NO
sounddesign took place!

Every manual was captured apart from couplers. This couplers are easy to combine with the ports and channels in Samplers. There was no use of noisereduction. The noise of the winding system and the bellows can clearly be heard. Our goal was to give the most clear expression from
this great organ, only orientated on the musicianship.

Detailed information about the very first seconds of every tone which are the only acusto-psychological facts to determine the character of the stop. You can even hear the noise made from the abstracts or the pallets. It`s the same with the reverberation tail heard via Release Trigger
Samples: You can here the pallets, abstracts and the reverb of the cathedral in full length.

The Symphonic Organ Sampleslibrary is very simple to use. There are more than 60 GigaSampler instruments in this library. These are not individual stops but carefully selected combinations of stops chosen by Peter Ewers himself during the reording sessions. These are some of the most commonly unsed combinations for this organ and are also used on Peter’s latest CD played on this organ.

Cathedral Reverb built in!

All 60 instruments feature the actual reverb of La madeleine. You will be amazed at how wonderful this sounds! Studio reverb units simply can’t recreate this kind of ambiance. These reverb tails last serveral seconds and build up as you play, just like a real cathedral pipe organ does. The ambience defaults to full volume but you can adjust the volume with the Mod-Wheel. (We like to leave the hall reverb all the way up ourselves!) You can even lower the reverb level while you play and on the final chord, bring it up so that you get the full decay when you release the notes.

Bring the entire, historic organ from the L’Eglise Royale Notre-Dame de Laken, Bruxelles  into your studio! The original cathedral ambiance is included via release triggered samples. Combinations and pedals, all wind-chest activity, all interferences, and all bellow noises are captured with breathtaking accuracy. Well just hear the difference.

Earlier attempts to digitally sample the original sound of a pipe or a pipe-family (a „stop“) employed small samples which were artificially looped, often without their original attack phases, and the characteristic sound of the pipes was lost. With the advent of GigaStudio and the ability to stream large samples from a hard drive Peter finally had the tool he needed to capture the grandure and beauty of this organ.

Additionally – due to the nature of previous digital sampling processes – the acoustic resonances of a given space, like the L’eglise royale Notre-Dame de Laeken, are lost, requiring the addition of reverb simulations. Using the key release-triggered sampling capability of the NemeSys GigaSampler, recorded samples of the church acoustics can be heard upon releasing the key – with the added benefit of continuous, real-time control over the volume of the natural acoustic space.
